Researchers with New York University have found a lack of oversight for medical researchers and studies, often resulting in false or exaggerated claims. Charles Seife, a journalism professor and the study’s author, analyzed 78 published papers reporting on clinical trials and found only three mentioned violations handed down from the US Food and Drug Administration. Seife and his team found 57 clinical trials receiving the most serious violation for reasons including recordkeeping, false information and poor patient safety. In one study the FDA found one patient need a foot amputation two weeks after treatment, yet the published paper stated that all patients improved. The majority of papers make no mention of violations given by the FDA.
