On Wednesday the co-chairman of the Donetsk People’s Republic Andrei Purgin, stated that all of their efforts to convince Vladimir Putin he should adopt their territory as part of Russia, have been rejected (buried in ABC’s report). “We are unable to join the Russian Federation directly, so we will build our own country,” he said.
Sorry corporate media, you will not get your desired headline. Russia does not want to invade Ukraine, and they have no desire to expand their territory.
While NATO is quick to attack Russia for annexing Crimea, most of the world seems to have already forgotten about the other referendums in Lugansk and Donetsk, which took place on May 11th, 2014. According to the Independent, 90% of the residents of Donetsk and Lugansk took part in the vote. 89% of the votes in Donetsk and 96% in Lugansk, were in favor of independence from Ukraine. These citizens of Ukraine wanted independence because they felt their lives would be threatened under the new regime in Kiev. They were right.
These Ukrainians came out to vote despite the fact that several voting areas were attacked by the fascist ‘Right Sector’ National Guard, in what was an obvious attempt to terrorize Ukrainian citizens into not taking part in the democratic process. Still, 90% of the residents voted.
The United States issued a declaration back then which read,
“The referenda being planned for May 11 in portions of eastern Ukraine by armed separatist groups are illegal under Ukrainian law and are an attempt to create further division and disorder. If these referenda go forward, they will violate international law and the territorial integrity of Ukraine. The United States will not recognize the results of these illegal referenda.”
In the real world, citizens’ right to vote for independence is in line with international law, according to the International Court of Justice. It does not matter if it violates domestic law. Isn’t that the point? The ones who created “division and disorder” in East Ukraine were not citizens participating in the democratic process, but rather the murderous Right Sector National Guard composed of neo-Nazis.
The news that Putin is not in control of, and does not desire Donetsk or Lugansk to join Russia, should come as no surprise. Three days before the referendum for independence on May 11th, Vladimir Putin explicitly asked that the referenda be postponed. Clearly, Putin does not control the separatists. He said Russia would respect the results(unlike the United States), and called for the Kiev regime to engage in dialogue with residents. As we all know, the Kiev regime expressed no desire to engage in dialogue.
Since then, Russia has welcomed nearly a million Ukrainian refugees into their country, according to the United Nations. These are families who have fled from East Ukraine into Russia because their homes were being bombed repeatedly and attacked by fascists nearly everyday.
Since the referendums, Poroshenko has unleashed a brutal ‘anti-terror operation‘ on his own country, killing at least 2,600 E. Ukrainians, according to the Office of the UN High Commissioner on Human Rights. The corporate media is nowhere to be seen. Even much of the alternative media is backing off from publishing the truth in fear of(or so I suspect) being labeled as Russian propaganda. On September 1st Human Rights Watch released a report on these war crimes after interviewing more than a dozen people who witnessed, or became victims of artillery and rocket attacks killing civilians in populated areas.
It’s looking more and more like Washington’s coup in Kiev is going to fail. Putin has resisted all attempts to get involved militarily in Ukraine and clearly rejected the separatists wishes of joining Russia. Will the corporate media report it? Will the US State Department accept the coup’s fate? Instead of falling for the bait, knowing the truth was on his side, Putin decided to fight an information war instead. You know the State Department is feeling threatened when they start accusing the Associated Press of being brainwashed by Russian propaganda, just for asking questions…
The Associated Press Washington Bureau Chief Sally Buzbee appears to have responded to this accusation by the US government, releasing a list of eight ways the Obama administration is blocking information. If the corporate media is succeeding in anything, it is the demonizing of Vladimir Putin and convincing of the American public that Russia is brainwashing the youth.
