Largest Immigration Detention Center Built For Mostly Women And Children

(ANTIMEDIA) This Monday, Jeh C. Johnson, the secretary of Homeland Security, announced the grand opening of the country’s largest immigration detention facility, which is said to be specifically designed for the housing women and children. This new location is a result of President Obama’s recent executive orders on immigration, which have drawn criticism from both sides of the debate.

Obama may have offered amnesty to new residents that have traveled from foreign countries, but along with that will come a more intensified police state at the border, to prevent anyone new from getting in.

“Frankly, we want to send a message that our border is not open to illegal migration, and if you come here, you should not expect to simply be released,Johnson said.

The new detention center is located just under 100 miles northeast of Laredo, in a town called Dilley. The facility stretches over 50 acres and can reportedly hold up to 2,400 migrants.

Migrant rights activist Bishop Eusebio Elizondo, called the detention center inhumane in a recent statement, calling attention to the barbaric practice of essentially jailing foreigners for crossing government borders.

“It is inhumane to house young mothers with children in restrictive detention facilities as if they are criminals. Already traumatized from their journey, these families are very vulnerable and need care and support, not further emotional and psychological harm,” Elizondo said.

The facility, which will be called the South Texas Family Residential Center, will be run by Corrections Corporation of America, the largest private corrections company in the United States. CCA manages more than 67 facilities around the country.

It will cost an estimated $300 per day for each detainee.
