(TheAntiMedia) This week, 14-year-old Orwah Hammad, a Palestinian-American teenager living in the West Bank, was killed by members of the Israeli military. Hammad was born in New Orleans and moved to the West Bank when he was 6. The victim’s identity has been confirmed by both the US government and his family.
Hammad was shot while participating in a weekly protest against Israel’s occupation of the West Bank. Witnesses reported that the Israeli soldiers who shot Hammad through the neck and head accused him of throwing stones at them.
Brad Parker, a representative with an organization called Defense for Children International pointed out in a recent interview that it is fairly common for children to get killed by soldiers in the West Bank.
“Orwah is the tenth Palestinian child killed by Israeli forces with live ammunition in the occupied West Bank in 2014, Impunity is the norm for Israeli soldiers that commit violence against children as they consistently violate their own live-fire regulations and know that they will not be held accountable for their actions no matter what the result. There is no justice or accountability for child victims,” he said.
An Israeli army spokesman said in a statement that Israeli forces “managed to prevent an attack when they encountered a Palestinian man hurling a Molotov cocktail at them on the main road next to Silwad. They opened fire and they confirmed a hit.”
Jen Psaki, spokeswoman for the US State Department also commented on the incident, saying that “The United States expresses its deepest condolences to the family of a US citizen minor who was killed by the Israeli Defense Forces during clashes in Silwad on October 24.”
