Supreme Court Justice Scalia Found Dead at 79

(ANTIMEDIASupreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia was found dead this weekend, according to multiple reports. The 79-year-old was on a quail hunting trip just south of Marfa, Texas. He was discovered deceased on Saturday morning, having apparently passed away in his sleep.

Scalia was appointed to the court by Ronald Reagan in 1986.

Texas Governor Greg Abbott issued the following statement Saturday afternoon:

“[Scalia was] a man of God, a patriot, and an unswerving defender of the written constitution and the rule of law. He was a solid rock who turned away so many attempts to depart from and distort the Constitution. His fierce loyalty to the Constitution set an unmatched example, not just for judges and lawyers, but for all Americans.”

The impending appointment process to fill Scalia’s seat is sure to cause further political rifts between the two equally divisive ruling parties. President Obama has only one year left of his second term, and will be entrusted with selecting another justice.

Abbott concluded:

We mourn his passing, and we pray that his successor on the supreme court will take his place as a champion for the written Constitution and the rule of law.

“Cecilia and I extend our deepest condolences to his family, and we keep them in our thoughts and prayers.”

Judge Richard A. Posner wrote in The New Republic in 2011 that Scalia — who was known for his conservative intellectualism — was “the most influential justice of the last quarter century.” Scalia’s positions and decisions often sparked controversy in American politics.

Foul play is not suspected.
