A petition was filed on August 26th by The Center for Biological Diversity , the Center for Food Safety, the Xerces Society, and monarch scientist Dr. Lincoln Brower in order to seek protection for the once common monarch butterflies.
The monarch butterfly population has been reduced by ninety percent over the past twenty years. In terms related to the human population that’s the equivalent of losing every human in the united states except for those in Florida and Ohio. In addition to their reduced numbers they have also lost over 165 million acres of habitat and over a third of their summertime breeding grounds. Image credited to Wikimedia Commons.
Why has the Monarch’s population depleted so drastically in such a short period of time? Science policy analyst Bill Freese, with the Center for Food Safety, proclaims that Monsanto’s genetically modified crops and Roundup herbicide taking over the monarch butterflies Midwest habitat are the ones to blame.
Bill Freese says:
“The widespread decline of monarchs is driven by the massive spraying of herbicides on genetically engineered crops, which has virtually eliminated monarch habitat in cropland that dominates the Midwest landscape…Doing what is needed to protect monarchs will also benefit pollinators and other valuable insects, and thus safeguard our food supply.”
There’s been countless studies that illustrate the detrimental effects that GM crops and harmful herbicides such as Roundup have on living organisms as well as the overall ecosystem. This isn’t the first insect to be at risk, there’s been issues with the decline in the bee population as well. When is there going to be legitimate action taken in order to ensure the survival of humans and other organisms? Its time for citizens to become proactive in their local city council meetings in order to pressure local and eventually federal governments to do whats right. Its important to stand up against Monsanto, who continues to bully the system. It’s time to protect these monarch and other valuable wildlife now before its too late.
