Study Shows Gay Marriages are Generally More Functional than Straight Marriages

(ANTIMEDIA) According to new research, gay couples—compared to their heterosexual counterparts—are overall more successful in their married lives, specifically in respect to communication and the management of their own household.

The study, conducted by PricewaterhouseCoopers and the Families and Work Institute, indicated that

According to the 225 gay and straight dual-income couples surveyed, same-sex couples tend to communicate better, share chore duties more fairly and assign tasks based on personal preference rather than gender, income, hours worked or power position in the relationship.

Straight couples, the study found, tend to talk less and fall into more traditional gender roles, what one family describes as “pink chores” (dishes, laundry) and “blue chores” (yard work, auto work).

The survey vindicates popular claims that same-sex couples work just as well as traditional couples, even showing that gay couples work in better harmony compared to their straight counterparts. The study also hypothesized that because straight couples often fall victim to gender roles, they often will divide their responsibilities—unequally more often than not. Same-sex couples are more likely to work together in camaraderie, possibly because of a mutual understanding that both are equal and, therefore, should work together in an egalitarian fashion.

Where does the “sanctity of marriage” argument find its credence when studies show that same-sex couples are actually more likely to have a successful partnership? How long will conservatives justify their opposition to gay marriage on the basis that it is sinful? Besides religious doctrine, what evidence can challenge the argument that gay marriage is no different (or less legitimate) than straight? It is absurd that in the 21st century, homosexuals are still prohibited from marriage in many states while countries like Canada and England have long since progressed.
